Undelivered was a week long Unity VR project based on nightmare I had. I really like the internet trend of "Liminal Spaces", so I tried to add that concept into the games world design. The feeling of loneliness in a constructed environment really adds to the horror of the concept, especially in virtual reality.

Design

I had a lot of fun working on the level design and "directing" the players movements with scares. To me this was the most important part, the main mechanic is only to lead the player outside of their comfort zone - the elevator. I wanted to slowly give the player less and less "safe" things to grab onto.

The project was mostly constructed with Unity's ProBuilder plugin, which allowed me to quickly iterate on level geometry. The rest of the assets were authored in Blender. I found this workflow extremely effective for projects of this scale and would use a very similar pipeline for my game "Those Who Crawl"

Conclusion

The project was very positively received. There exist several lets-plays with mostly positive responses. Some players felt that the scares were not "big" enough, which I completely agree with. I'm not of a fan of jump scares and usually avoid them, I want to feel like the horror is "earned". Because of this, I would like to have made this project's play time longer and allow for the slow burn to build up to something more satisfying.
